July 2024 Volunteer Update

Hey y'all! At United Way GBACC, we believe in the power of mobilizing communities to create a better quality of life for all. From our committees to our Day of Caring service opportunity, volunteers lie at the heart of our work. They are the lifeblood of not only United Way, but of nonprofits just like ours across our community, nation, and world. Volunteerism is not simply about the work that is done throughout our communities, but personal impact that individuals feel when they give back. Our neighbors are impacted, but most often, you as the volunteer are impacted even more.

Last month for United Way Day of Action, we hosted a hygiene backpack drive in preparation for back to school for our local K-12 students. We collected over $5,000 in hygiene items from various companies and individuals in the Greater Baytown and Chambers County area, we were able to fully assemble 200+ backpacks full of hygiene products, notebooks and reading books. We couldn't do it without you! Thank you to every volunteer and donor who made this possible!

Our area has recently been affected by Hurricane Beryl, leaving thousands without power or water, and even more to deal with the damages left in the aftermath of the storm. We are and continue to be the long-term recovery hub, supported individuals and families as they rebuild after natural disasters. The Baytown Area and Chambers County Disaster Recovery group (BACC - DR) has been activated and is working to identify homes in need of repair that your United Way can support.

We are actively seeking volunteers to serve as Disaster Recovery support after natural disasters this hurricane season. These volunteers will be on stand by until they are called to action by our BACC-DR team, when they will help residents in need with muck and gut in flooded homes, debris removal, and other recovery tasks. As of July 19, Team United is currently assessing homes and working with homeowners to see what we call can do.
