Who We Are

Big Brothers Big Sisters' (BBBS) mission is to build and support one-to-one relationships to ignite the biggest possible futures for youth. BBBS is the oldest and largest youth mentoring program with more than 100-year history of creating positive life outcomes for children. Founded in New York City in 1904, the Houston affiliate was established in 1950. BBBS is founded on the vision that all youth achieve their full potential.

What We Do

Volunteer mentors, Big Brothers and Sisters, spend at least four hours a month with their mentee, Little Brother or Sister, building healthy relationships. The platform of the positive friendship allows the Little to open up about their personal life, problems at school, and any issues they are facing in a supportive and nurturing environment.

While BBBS does not have a brick and mortar location in the Greater Baytown and Chambers County region, mentoring occurs throughout the community where mentors and mentees participate in activities they both enjoy.

Bigs expose their Littles to the world outside their neighborhoods, broadening their horizons for the future.

The overarching goals are for every child in the BBBS program to achieve:

  • Academic success;
  • Avoidance of risky behaviors; and
  • Higher aspirations, greater self-confidence, and healthier relationships.

In the traditional Community-Based Mentoring model, matches meet in the community and participate in activities they both enjoy. Matches attend a variety of BBBS-facilitated events to create a sense of community and increase ease of participation. BBBS-facilitated activities include college tours, a teen conference, cooking workshops, and yoga workshops to name a few. Matches meet throughout the year and visit the park, attend soccer practice, water coloring, and going on a fishing trip, for example.
