Little Free Libraries Book Preparation Volunteer Opportunity

We are in need of volunteers to help package bags of books for our Route Stewards who refill our Little Free Libraries throughout the community. Your help ensures that our libraries stay stocked with great books for everyone to enjoy.

Volunteer Schedule:
Thursdays
10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Volunteer Tasks:

Pick up donated books from the Sterling Library on Thursdays

Bring the donated books back to the United Way office

Sort donated books

Stamp books for United Way approval

Place bookmarks inside the books

Package books into bags of 50

Place completed bags on the designated book bag shelves for Route Stewards to pick up

This is a simple but very important way to support literacy in our community and help keep our Little Free Libraries filled with books for readers of all ages.

The Clothing for Kids Program at the United Way office supports teachers who are helping students in need.

Through this program, teachers submit clothing and hygiene requests for students who may lack proper resources. Our goal is to ensure students can focus on academics — not on the lack of clothing or hygiene essentials.

Volunteers play a vital role in maintaining our Clothing for Kids Closet and preparing these student requests with care and confidentiality.

Help bring financial literacy to life for local high school students by volunteering at Reality Check, an interactive real-world simulation. In this hands-on experience, students are assigned a career, salary, and family scenario, then must make everyday financial decisions such as paying rent, choosing healthcare, buying groceries, budgeting for transportation, and more.

Volunteers serve as station hosts, guiding students through key life expenses and helping them understand how quickly financial choices add up. This is a fun, engaging opportunity to encourage practical learning, spark meaningful conversations, and support students as they build real-life money management skills.

Volunteer responsibilities may include:

Staffing a simulation station such as housing, transportation, insurance, childcare, or banking

Explaining costs and options to students

Helping students stay engaged as they make financial decisions

Creating a positive, encouraging learning environment

No financial expertise is required—just a willingness to interact with students and help make the experience impactful.

The Events Committee is a group dedicated to planning and executing a series of events aimed at raising funds, engaging the community, and supporting United Way’s mission. You will play a key role in ensuring the success of these events through contributing your time, creativity, and passion. This will be a key year as we launch our inaugural United for Good Gala, our new signature fundraising event.

Core Responsibilities
• Play a hands-on role in developing events and executing them the day-of.
• Be a United Way ambassador and familiarize yourself with our mission and brand.
• Participate in regular committee meetings and event workday sessions.
• Participate in post-event evaluations and identify areas for improvement.
• Volunteer at all United Way event functions and meetings, when possible.
• Events may include:
     o Executive Breakfast (September)
     o United Way 80th Anniversary Celebration (January)
     o United for You Gala (May or June)
     o Campaign Awards Event (July)

RD Committee volunteers are a dynamic group of community advocates who support United Way’s fundraising and engagement efforts. Volunteers will help expand the organization’s reach by building relationships, raising funds, and representing United Way at key events. This will be a key year as we launch our inaugural United for Good Gala, our new signature fundraising event.

Core Responsibilities
• Attend RD Committee Orientation (Fall).
• Be a United Way ambassador and familiarize yourself with our mission and brand.
• Support campaign efforts by managing a portfolio (ex: corporate partners, donors, or events).
• Help identify and engage new contacts within your networks.
• Participate in regular committee meetings and one-on-one meetings with United Way staff.
• Represent United Way at community and campaign-related events.
• Support and attend key events, including:
     o Executive Breakfast (September)
     o United Way 80th Anniversary Celebration (January)
     o United for You Gala (May or June)
     o Small Business, Big Impact events (tbd)

Baytown and Chambers County Disaster Recovery Team might be on standby, but recruiting volunteers to help support the community when disaster strikes is ongoing. Disasters can hit our community at any time. Whether fires, hurricanes, flooding, or any other kind of disaster, we need volunteers ready to mobilize when the need arises. Volunteers will be called upon when disaster strikes in our area. If you are interested in volunteering to support the disaster recovery respondents, please sign up here.  

You will be contacted, if volunteers are needed for any projects related to disaster recovery. Duties may include providing immediate shelter protection (tarps), trash/debris clean up, mucking & gutting of homes, packing assistance, and other activities as determined by needs of the community. We are always in need of volunteers who can speak Spanish.
